In this video, we talk about the technology that powers ecommerce's best customer loyalty programs. Steve Deckert, Co-founder at, discusses..

eCommerce merchants need several technology tools to put all the pieces of the marketing plan together. As a full-service eCommerce agency, we have formed partnerships with the best technology companies in the industry, and we're sharing the brains behind these businesses in our partner interview series. In this post, we outline the technology that powers customer loyalty programs.

Check out Part 2 of our three part video interview series with Steve Deckert, Co-Founder of In this video, we talk about the technology behind the tool.

AleneSo at Groove, we're really focused on solving problems for our ecommerce clients, and I know you guys have the same focus so just talk a little bit about what problems your technology solves for ecommerce merchants.

SteveA lot of retailers are all fighting for the same consumers, basically. There's so much noise. There's so many advertisements that consumers are being bombarded with that it's really hard for a consumer to figure out which stores to shop with.

And it's really hard for businesses to differentiate themselves against other retailers, as well. So when you run a Smile Rewards Program, what you're trying to do is transform that transactional relationship that you have with your customers into an emotional one.

Because when you smile, that's an emotional response that you have.

And that's a really great way for you, as a business, to engage your customers
and differentiate yourself against all of the competition that exists out there.

Alene: So where do you see ecommerce going over the next 12 months to two years? And how will your company help drive that innovation?

SteveI think people are going to trust brands less that they haven't engaged with before, and they're going to rely more on their experiences and their friends' experiences to determine where they're going to shop. I think social proof will be extremely important in the coming digital age. So, for us, the way that we're trying to combat and align with that is to create remarkable experiences that customers remark about.

And trying to cut through all of the noise out there so that people who do shop give you, they have something to smile about. And they can tell that to their friends hopefully who trust them more than advertising.

Alene: Since we're on the topic of technology, I wanted to throw one question in there: what's the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?

SteveI like playing board games. I think that's pretty nerdy, but it's a nerdy fun thing and we do it here at Smile all the time.

My favorite board game is a board game called Acquire which is kind of like Risk and Monopoly blended into one, and it's about owning stocks and stuff like that. So I love it. I'm kind of a business geek and I geek out on that all the time.
